Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today expressed optimism that a free and fair election will be held on time as promised by interim government's Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

“We hope that the aspirations of the people will be realized through free and fair elections at the right time, as promised by the Chief Adviser," he told a programme titled Implementation of the Recommendations of the UN Fact-Finding Report this afternoon at a city hotel.

Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus also joined the event and spoke.

Fakhrul said that there will be some disagreements in democracy. But a division is being created among the nation by exaggerating minor differences, he added.

Demanding that the July mass killing trial and necessary reforms be expedited, the BNP Secretary General said but reforms will have to be made from the depths of the state, otherwise dictatorship will return, reports BSS.

Noting that a representative government is very important, Fakhrul said, "We all need to remember one thing. A government that represents the people is very important.”

July is not just the month of liberation from tyranny, but also the month of rebirth of the nation, Fakhrul said, "Our youth will cooperate in building the Bangladesh of the future, where human rights will be truly established in Bangladesh. People will be able to build a welfare state with their rights and our children will no longer have to give their lives like this."
