A wave of arson attacks and explosions shook the capital on Tuesday, leaving the nation tense on the eve of the banned Awami League’s announced “Dhaka Lockdown” programme.

A train carriage was set ablaze in Tejgaon around 10pm, confirmed Ibne Mizan, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Tejgaon division). No casualties were reported in the incident.

Earlier, around 9:20pm, two crude bombs exploded near the metro station at Dhaka University’s Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), spreading panic among people in the area. According to police, the explosives were thrown from the direction of Suhrawardy Udyan before the perpetrators fled the scene.

Moments after the blasts, Dhaka University students took to the streets in protest, condemning the attack.

At about the same time, another crude bomb went off in front of the Twin Tower Concord Shopping Complex near Shantinagar intersection, eyewitnesses said.

Earlier in the evening, an unidentified individual hurled a crude bomb near a police checkpoint in front of the Grameen Bank headquarters in Mirpur.

In response to the escalating incidents, police have set up checkposts and launched extensive searches on Dhaka-bound vehicles throughout the day.

Authorities are yet to determine who was behind the attacks or their motive, as fear and uncertainty gripped the capital.
