Tourist travel to the coral island of St Martin’s has been suspended following government restrictions, marking the end of the current tourism season. Around 110,000 visitors travelled to the island over the two-month period from 1 December to 31 January.
The information was shared by Hossain Islam Bahadur, general secretary of the Sea Cruise Operators Owners Association of Bangladesh.
He said vessels operating on Friday did not carry any new tourists to the island. Instead, they brought back nearly 2,000 visitors who had been staying there.
The ships departed St Martin’s for Cox’s Bazar at around 3:00pm.
During the season, seven tourist vessels operated on the Cox’s Bazar–St Martin’s route.
Under government directives, all tourist ship operations on this route will remain suspended from 1 February until the next season.
The restrictions, in place since 2023, aim to protect the island’s fragile environment, ecosystem and biodiversity.
