National Security Adviser and High Representative to the Chief Adviser for Rohingya affairs, Khalilur Rahman, said on Sunday that the 20% tariff imposed by the United States on Bangladeshi goods may decrease further as negotiations continue.

“We worked tirelessly to reduce the tariff from 35% to 20%. We hope it will come down even more,” he stated at a reception organised by the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) at Gulshan Club in Dhaka.

Representatives from major trade bodies such as FBCCI, BGMEA, BKMEA, DCCI, LFMEAB, BGAPMEA, BGBA, BTTLMEA, ICC-Bangladesh, and BCI attended the event.

Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin said further negotiations in the US might take place within two to three weeks.

“Our chief adviser took a cautious approach to the US tariff issue. The success is due to combined efforts,” he added.

The adviser also highlighted future challenges as Bangladesh prepares to graduate from Least Developed Country (LDC) status, which will mean losing preferential trade benefits.

“While we export around $8 billion worth of goods to the US, which we can manage, we must also focus on other exports valued at $42 billion. The end of LDC status will be our next major challenge,” he said.
