The government has approved major imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fertilisers to meet rising energy demand and ensure sufficient agricultural supply for the 2025-26 fiscal year.

The decisions were made at a meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase, chaired by Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed.

Under the energy plan, Petrobangla will procure three spot-market LNG cargoes from TotalEnergies Gas & Power Ltd, UK, the lowest bidder. Each shipment will carry 3.36 million MMBtu, scheduled to arrive on October 6–7, October 19–20, and October 28–29, at prices of USD 11.34, 11.44, and 11.54 per MMBtu. The total cost of the LNG imports will exceed Tk 1,440 crore.

Officials said the purchases aim to ease seasonal gas shortages as demand peaks in industries, power plants, and households during winter.

Separately, the government approved imports of 2.15 lakh tonnes of fertilisers under state-to-state contracts with Russia, Morocco, and Canada, to be implemented by the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC).

From Russia, 35,000 tonnes of Muriate of Potash (MOP) will be imported at USD 361 per tonne, costing Tk 154.91 crore. Morocco’s OCP will supply 40,000 tonnes of Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) at USD 782.67 per tonne (Tk 384.45 crore) and two lots of 30,000 tonnes of Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) at USD 584.67 per tonne (Tk 215 crore per lot). Canada will provide two lots of MOP fertiliser, each 40,000 tonnes at USD 361 per tonne, costing around Tk 177 crore per lot.

The total fertiliser deals are valued at over Tk 1,320 crore. Officials said the agreements follow prior long-term contracts and aim to stabilise supply amid global market volatility.

Combined, the LNG and fertiliser imports approved on Tuesday amount to more than Tk 2,760 crore, highlighting the government’s focus on securing energy and supporting agriculture ahead of the next fiscal year.
