Job quota protests at major private universities in Dhaka City

Dhaka, Aug 4--Faculty members of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) gathered at the Mirpur DOHS gate for a peaceful human chain in support of the constitution and human rights at 12:00pm on saturday.

The participants marched in silence from the DOHS gate to Sagufta, according to a press release.

This peaceful demonstration was held in response to the ongoing nationwide repression, killings, harassment, and arrests of students, teachers and the general public.

Faculty members of BUP addressed the gathering, strongly condemning these incidents and demanding the immediate release of all detained students, including those from BUP.

Earlier on August 2, in a statement signed by approximately 200 BUP faculty members expressed their concerns and called for an end to the injustices faced by students, teachers and citizens across the country.

"We, the hereinafter named faculty members of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), in our personal capacity extend solidarity to the rightful demands of the students of Bangladesh," read the release.

Besides, they strongly condemned the indiscriminate and unlawful use of force on the peaceful protest of the students and demand transparent and fair investigation of the tragic death incident of our beloved student Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho (MBA Professional- 36 Batch) and all other deceased as well as wounded citizens of the nation.

The faculty members also called for the immediate release of our students, namely, Waqiur Rahman Shawon (Finance and Banking-07 Batch) and Nazmul Rahman Khan Rayhan (MBA Professional-35 Batch), and all other students who have been detained or arrested arbitrarily. We further demand for the removal of any present or future threat of persecution and oppression against the students.

"We unequivocally state that we stand with our students in all lawful and just causes to uphold their constitutional and universal human rights. Any of our former or current students can reach out to us for any sort of assistance or support," according to the press release. - UNB
