A 15-year-old youth drowned while bathing in a pond on the premises of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) in Tangail today.

The incident occurred at around 12:30 pm at Ranighat Pond on the university premises.

The deceased, Hasibur Rahman, was the son of Tara Mia of Bagbari area adjacent to the university. He worked at a local mobile servicing shop.

According to police and local residents, around 16-20 youths went to Ranighat Pond to bathe after playing football.

At one point, Hasibur Rahman drowned in the water. People present at the scene rescued him and took him to Tangail General Hospital in critical condition, where the attending physician declared him dead.

University Proctor Professor Dr Monir Morshed said, "We reached the spot immediately after the incident. We spoke with the locals and police. We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident."

He urged everyone to exercise caution while bathing in ponds, reports BSS.
