Incessant rain and water from upstream have pushed up the water level of the Jamuna River, sparking fears of flood in Sirajganj.
Flash flood has inundated many char and low-lying areas, marooning thousands of people and damaging houses, roads and vast tracts of crops.
Sirajganj Water Development Board’s officer Hasanur Rahman said the water is still below the danger level but is rising alarmingly. The water level has risen 31 cm in the last 24 hours and it is flowing 84 cm below the danger mark at Sirajganj Hard Point, he said.
Executive Engineer Shafikul Islam said if the situation does not improve, then the water level will cross the danger level within a few days.
