Speakers at a conference in Savar on Saturday have called for preserving the DNAs of Biranganas (female veterans) of the War of Liberation to help their offsprings who been adopted or taken abroad to find their roots once they feel the urge.

Women's rights and welfare organisation, Naripokkho organised the 2-day conference of Biranganas to mark the 40th anniversary of its founding on 2-3 March. To celebrate the milestone Naripokkho has taken up a year-long programme titled 'Mora akaser moto badhaheen' (We obstackle-free like the sky).

Around two hundred thousand women lost their chestity during the 9-month war and are called Biranganas.

The conference of 'Biranganas' (female veterans) of the War of Liberation was held at the Public Health House of the Gonoshasthya Kendra.

A total of 38 Biranganas from 13 districts took part in the conference which deliberated on the problems they are still facing in leading normal life in the society.

They demanded housing facilities, repair of their existing houses, plus medical and other allowances. Most important of all they asked for the establishment of some memorials so that people deal with them with honour in the society. The conference was addressed among others by flim makers Kawsar Chowdhury and Shabnam Ferdousi, and Dolly Ibrahim, daughter of Dr. Nileema Ibrahim.

On the second day of the conference the biranganas were taken to a rise of the metrorail train in Dhaka City.

Naripokkho has been working for the welfare of the Biranganas since 2011. So far 94 Biranganas have been given support including monthly allowances, health and housing support under the under the programme, '71-er ze narider amra bhulechi' (Women of 1971 whom we have forgotten).
