Yet another gold haul in Chittagong

Customs officials have seized 53 gold bars from a passenger on transit at Chittagong’s Shah Amanat Airport.
The contraband gold was found on Anis Chowdhury, 34 and it weighed more than 6 kgs, said Airport Customs Assistant Commissioner Moshiur Rahman Mondol.Anis hails from Chittagong and had arrived in the Shah Amanat International airport on a Biman flight from Dubai.
The customs authorities checked Chowdhury after his movements evoked suspicion, said Mondol.
“The gold was wrapped around his knees with tape.”
The seized contraband was worth more than Tk 20 million, Mondol said.
Monday’s haul was yet another case of the many in recent weeks involving passengers flying in with huge quantity of contraband gold.
Many say Bangladesh is a conduit for smuggling gold into India, after import restrictions by the current UPA government have led to a spurt in demand. – bdnews24.com
