At Least 30 Dead After Bolivia Bus Plunges Into Ravine
A passenger bus plunged 800 meters into a ravine in southern Bolivia on Monday, killing at least 30 people and injuring 15, authorities and local media reported.
The tragic accident occurred near the town of Yocalla, in the country’s mountainous southern region. According to Police Colonel Victor Benavides, the bodies of at least 30 victims have been recovered and sent to local morgues for identification.
The crash took place on a narrow, two-way road connecting the cities of Potosí and Oruro, which winds along steep cliffs and deep ravines. Local news outlet Unitel reported that 15 survivors, including three children, were rushed to nearby hospitals. Some are in serious condition.
While the exact number of passengers on board remains unclear, authorities are investigating the cause of the crash. Police suspect the driver lost control of the vehicle due to speeding, according to Benavides.
This accident is the deadliest reported in Bolivia this year, surpassing a similar crash in January near Potosí, which claimed the lives of 19 people.
Bolivia's treacherous mountain roads are known for their high accident rates. Government statistics reveal that road fatalities in the country average around 1,400 annually, in a nation of approximately 12 million residents.
