A Dhaka tribunal has set 1 June for the charge framing hearing in the case filed over the rape and murder of eight-year-old Ramisa Akter in the city’s Pallabi area.

Judge Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Children Violence Suppression Tribunal fixed the date on Sunday after accepting the charge sheet against the prime accused, Sohel Rana, and his wife, Swapna Akter, according to tribunal sources.

Earlier in the day, police submitted the charge sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka, naming the two accused in the case. The matter was later transferred to the Children Violence Suppression Tribunal for trial proceedings.

Court officials said the tribunal was originally scheduled to remain closed for Eid and vacation until 15 June. However, the leave has been cancelled under special instructions to ensure that the trial process in the Ramisa case moves forward without delay.

Ramisa, a second-grade student at Popular Model High School in Mirpur, was found dead in a neighbouring flat in the same building on 19 May.

Police said the main accused, Sohel Rana, 34, later gave a confessional statement before a court on 20 May, admitting to sexually assaulting and killing the child.

The case has triggered widespread concern, with authorities moving to expedite legal proceedings.
