At least seven police officers, including a deputy commissioner and an assistant commissioner of the Ramna division, were injured in a violent clash with protesters in the Shahbagh area of the capital this afternoon. The incident occurred near the Hotel InterContinental intersection, where demonstrators were protesting against violence against women.

Among the injured were Ramna Division Deputy Police Commissioner Md. Masud Alam, Assistant Commissioner Abdullah Al Mamun, two female police officers, and three male constables. Assistant Commissioner Mamun sustained critical injuries, according to a police statement.

The incident unfolded around 3:35 p.m. when a group of 60-70 protesters, both men and women, was intercepted by police as they attempted to march towards Jamuna, the official residence of the Chief Adviser. The protesters reportedly used women as shields while attempting to break through a police barricade at the intersection.

The police had asked the protesters to disperse for the sake of nearby state installations' security and to maintain normal traffic flow. However, the situation quickly escalated when the protesters became aggressive, hurling bricks and stones at the officers. A violent scuffle ensued, resulting in injuries to several law enforcement personnel.

The police managed to regain control of the situation by dispersing the protesters, and legal action is now underway against those responsible for the assault on the officers.
