A Rohingya couple has been arrested while attempting to obtain National Identity (NID) cards using false documents at the Kamarkhanda Upazila Election Office in Sirajganj.

The couple—Anis, 37, and his wife Rokeya Begum, 31—are residents of Ukhia Tengkhali Camp-12 G-4 in Cox’s Bazar, confirmed Kamarkhand Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Latif.

According to police, the pair arrived at the election office on Sunday afternoon with forged documents to register as voters.

However, their names, addresses, and use of language raised suspicions among officials.

The matter was promptly reported to the Upazila Executive Officer and District Election Officer.

The couple was detained and taken to the Upazila Executive Officer's office for questioning.

During interrogation, they admitted to being Rohingya refugees. On Monday afternoon, they were handed over to police custody.

Kamarkhand Upazila Election Officer Masud Rana filed a case in connection with the incident, reports UNB.

He said that the couple was sent to jail and an investigation is currently underway.
