Saint Kitts and Nevis to deepen economic ties with Bangladesh

Bangladesh and Saint Kitts and Nevis have expressed deep interest to deepen multilateral relations with both sides emphasising expanded trade, investment and multilateral collaboration.

Honorary Consul Tanveer Ahmed has expressed this view while speaking at a reception on the 43rd Independence Day of Saint Kitts and Nevis at a city hotel on Friday evening.

He also sees the possibility of holding bilateral consultations and exchanging high-level visits to inject further momentum into the growing partnership in the coming days.

The honorary consul said stronger economic ties could help stimulate cooperation in other sectors.

The reception brought together politicians, diplomats, government officials, bankers, business leaders, media representatives and other distinguished guests, highlighting the growing bonds of friendship between the Caribbean nation and Bangladesh.

Honorary Consul Tanveer Ahmed and Mrs Nichaphut Sakuntanu hosted the reception.

Speaking on the occasion, guests expressed hope that the relationship between Saint Kitts and Nevis and Bangladesh would continue to grow, guided by shared aspirations, friendships and greater people-to-people contacts.

Bangladesh and Saint Kitts and Nevis, an island country in the West Indies,  established diplomatic relationship formally by signing a Joint Communiqué in September 1, 2020.

The then Bangladesh Ambassador to the US, Mohammad Ziauddin, and Saint Kitts and Nevis ambassador to the US Thelma Phillip Browne inked the communiqué on behalf of their respective countries at the Bangladesh embassy in Washington, DC.

Saint Kitts and Nevis is an active member of the United Nations, Caribbean Community (CARICOM); Organization of American States (OAS), Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and other international bodies and multilateral forums.

With the establishment of diplomatic ties, Bangladesh would expect support of Saint Kitts and Nevis on different critical issues in international and multilateral fora. 

Saint Kitts and Nevis, a twin-island federation in the Caribbean, gained independence from the United Kingdom on September 19, 1983.

Saint Kitts and Nevis has an area of 260 Km2 so it is one of the smallest countries in the world.

The island with some 47,000 people, is also one of the least populous countries in the world and has a population density of 180 people per km2.

Its capital is Basseterre and its currency is East Caribbean dollars.

The gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in Saint Kitts and Nevis stood at 21,000 U.S. dollars in 2025. 

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) reported in March said that real GDP growth  of Saint Kitts and Nevis  is estimated to have slowed to 1.5 percent in 2025 and is expected to pick up to 2.2 percent in 2026.
