A master plan will be developed to restore 19 canals in Dhaka to tackle the city's persistent waterlogging problem, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan announced on Sunday.

Speaking at an inter-ministerial meeting at Nagar Bhaban, Rizwana outlined the plan’s objectives, which include alleviating waterlogging in key areas like Dhanmondi and Malibagh. The project will follow a month-by-month action plan, and she emphasized that owners of high-rise buildings must ensure proper waste management to prevent further pollution.

Rizwana also highlighted the importance of regular dredging to maintain water flow and long-term strategies for canal management. “Effective coordination among concerned agencies and strict monitoring are essential to prevent encroachment and ensure proper canal maintenance,” she said.

The meeting, chaired by Local Government Division Secretary Md Nizam Uddin, focused on reclaiming canals, removing illegal structures, and improving the management of water bodies to address waterlogging issues.

Other key officials present included Water Resources Ministry Secretary Nazmul Ahsan, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Mohammad Ejaz, and Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Md Shahjahan Mia.
