Dhaka’s sky turned into a canvas of lights this evening (14 April) as a dazzling drone show illuminated the area in front of the National Parliament building on Manik Mia Avenue, marking the vibrant celebration of Pahela Baishakh, the Bengali New Year.
Organised by the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh and executed by a Chinese technology team, the spectacular display drew thousands of spectators who gathered to welcome the New Year with festive cheer.
Earlier in the day, a lively concert kicked off the celebrations at 3 PM, while roads around the Parliament building were closed to accommodate the crowds and festivities.
Mohammad Emon, a Moghbazar resident who visited the venue with his family, shared his excitement: “We came specifically to see the drone show tonight. There aren't many open spaces in the capital, so we brought our children here to enjoy this experience and connect with our culture.”
Between 3 PM and 5 PM, this TBS reporter observed vendors setting up colourful stalls near the South Plaza of the Parliament building, offering a range of traditional and Baishakhi-themed goods. From dolls, balloons, and Ektaara musical instruments to flutes, wooden horses, jute bags, and folk art frames, the fair buzzed with excitement.
Mohammad Oliullah, a vendor selling handcrafted Babui bird’s nests, said, “I brought 30 pieces, and they were all sold within an hour.”
Artists offering live sketches of visitors also drew significant attention, adding an artistic flair to the festive atmosphere. Meanwhile, children seemed especially thrilled, eagerly browsing the wide array of toys and souvenirs.
As the sun set, the sky lit up with hundreds of choreographed drones, capping off a day filled with music, colour, and community spirit.
