Bangladesh has officially signed the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Labour Centre Statute, marking a significant step towards promoting labour rights and welfare. The signing ceremony took place at the OIC headquarters in Jeddah.

Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. M Sakhawat Hussain, Adviser to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, signed the Statute on behalf of the Bangladesh government. He was warmly received by Dr. Ahmad Kawesa Sengendo, OIC Assistant Secretary General for Economic Affairs.

During their discussions, both sides underscored the importance of the Statute in enhancing labour standards and ensuring greater protection and welfare for workers in Bangladesh. The Adviser emphasized Bangladesh’s commitment to international labour standards, noting that the country is a signatory to all core conventions and protocols of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

He highlighted Bangladesh's continued progress in improving factory safety, raising minimum wages, and ensuring better working conditions for its labour force. The OIC official congratulated Bangladesh on joining the Labour Centre and appreciated the government’s efforts to uplift workers’ rights.

In addition to labour issues, both parties discussed expanding cooperation in trade, investment, and employment. Dr. Hussain, who also oversees the shipping sector, shared insights into Bangladesh's growing shipbuilding industry, which is generating employment for an increasing number of skilled and semi-skilled workers.

The signing ceremony was also attended by Bangladesh’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the OIC, M J H Jabed, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

This development marks a new chapter in Bangladesh’s engagement with the OIC and reinforces its commitment to labour welfare on the international stage.
