A seven-day government holiday begins on Monday across Bangladesh as preparations intensify for Eid-ul-Azha, the second-largest religious festival for Muslims.
During the break, government offices, courts, and many private institutions will remain closed, triggering a massive travel surge as people leave major cities, especially Dhaka, to celebrate the festival with their families in hometowns.
Eid-ul-Azha is expected to be observed in the country on May 28.
However, essential services will continue during the holiday period. Doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers engaged in treating measles patients and emergency medical services have been excluded from the holiday schedule, with leave cancelled to ensure uninterrupted healthcare support.
The government had earlier announced the seven-day holiday from May 25 to May 31 through a cabinet decision.
Officials said the decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by the head of government.
Government offices remained open on May 23 (Saturday) despite the holiday schedule, while normal operations will resume on June 1.
Authorities expect heavy passenger movement over the coming days as millions travel to celebrate Eid with their families, putting transport services and highways under significant pressure.
