The wave of resignations unfolded on social media platforms, with leaders expressing dismay over BCL's recent actions, particularly the alleged assault on quota reform demonstrators at Dhaka University. This incident, which occurred on Monday, sparked outrage among student activists across the country.
In a show of solidarity, nearly a hundred activists from various universities have publicly disassociated themselves from the ruling party's student wing, pledging unwavering support to the quota reform movement.
Responding to the resignations, BCL president Saddam Hossain acknowledged the developments, attributing them to attempts aimed at causing confusion within the organization. He confirmed that investigations were underway but declined to provide further details.
"I am also human, just like you. You too are aware of the developments that are taking place in the country. Considering these, I have resigned from my position in the BCL," stated Nusrat Jahan Surovi, organizing secretary of a hall unit at Cumilla University, reflecting the sentiment driving the resignations.
Meanwhile, Dhaka University students have mobilized through campus and departmental social media groups, announcing a collective boycott of BCL members involved in the assault. Among those resigning from Dhaka University units are Ali Imam Jewel, organizing secretary of the leather engineering institute unit; Rupak Kumar Nayak, literature affairs secretary; Jeba Sayema, assistant secretary of the social science unit; Gazi Md Abdul Mannan and Hasibul Hasan, vice presidents of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall unit; Tamanna Rahman, vice president of Rokeya Hall unit; Israt Jahan Sumana, assistant secretary of Shamsun Nahar Hall unit; and Abullah Al Mubin, member of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall unit.
Additionally, leaders from Cumilla University and Kushtia Medical College units have also stepped down from their respective positions within the organization.
The resignations underscore escalating tensions within BCL, raising questions about its internal cohesion and leadership's response to student grievances.
