Mahfuj Alam, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser

Mahfuj Alam, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser, affirmed on Thursday that the interim government will not tolerate any attacks on media freedom or freedom of expression.

At a media briefing at the Foreign Service Academy, he emphasized the government's stance on protecting the press, warning that legal action will be taken against anyone attempting to undermine media freedoms.

This statement follows a warning from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which expressed serious concerns over reported threats and planned attacks on certain media outlets in Bangladesh. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding media freedom and condemned any intimidation of the press, stating that those responsible for such actions would face legal consequences.

Mahfuj also announced that the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the Awami League, has been banned due to its designation as a terrorist organization. He urged journalists to avoid promoting this group through their media outlets.

During the briefing, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan clarified that while the BCL is banned, no such decision has been made regarding its parent organization, the Awami League, or any other groups. She also noted that there are currently no initiatives to confiscate the assets of the banned organization. Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam was also present at the briefing.
