Foreign nationals in Bangladesh can now access emergency services in English by dialing the national helpline 999, announced Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam.

In a move to enhance support for foreign visitors and residents, the IGP has instructed the relevant authorities to ensure smooth emergency assistance for foreigners, according to a Police Headquarters press release issued Thursday.

The new service allows foreign tourists, expatriates, and individuals working with diplomatic missions, UN agencies, and international organizations to call 999 in English. The service is available through both Bangladeshi mobile operator SIM cards and landline phones, offering access to police, fire, and ambulance services.

To accommodate English-speaking callers, a sufficient number of duty desks have been set up, operating in three shifts daily.

Since becoming operational on January 12, callers needing English-language assistance can now press ‘2’ after dialing 999.
