Eminent citizens of Bangladesh have paid tribute to three-time former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, saying that to build a strong and progressive country, people must follow the path she charted.
Speaking at a condolence meeting titled “Invincible Begum Khaleda Zia” at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building, participants remembered her political vision and sacrifices. They noted that despite enduring prolonged political oppression, Khaleda Zia never spread animosity, even after the mass uprising of 2024. Instead, she called for unity, mobilizing youth, and building a knowledge-based nation.
Top political leaders, diplomats, journalists, academics, business figures, and citizens attended the gathering, reflecting her influence across sectors. The program began with a documentary on her life, followed by recitations from the Holy Quran, and concluded with prayers for her soul.
Speakers highlighted Khaleda Zia’s journey from a homemaker to the Prime Minister and her unwavering contributions to Bangladesh’s democratic movement and state governance. They recalled her leadership qualities, patience, and resilience even during the most challenging times.
Former Chief Justice Syed JR Modassir Hossain said Khaleda Zia was a stateswoman who advocated peace over vengeance, emphasizing:
"She had said—not destruction, not revenge, not vengeance; we must build a peaceful society with love."
He urged the government to confer the highest state honor upon her.
Economist Professor Mahbub Ullah recalled her dedication to the country and her nationalistic stance during issues like the Tipaimukh Dam project. He highlighted three of her enduring messages:
"We have friends abroad, not masters; the flag of independence is in our hands, shackles are in theirs; I have no address abroad—the country is my final address."
He added that if the party and the nation embrace her principles, Bangladesh’s future will be secure.
Other speakers, including law adviser Asif Nazrul, editors Mahfuz Anam and Nurul Kabir, and researcher Mohiuddin Ahmed, praised her political restraint, integrity, and guidance. They emphasized that her message of rejecting vengeance and building knowledge-based governance remains relevant today.
BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman and his family attended the event. Security was heightened, with army, police, RAB, BGB, Coast Guard, and Ansar personnel deployed to manage the large crowd. Senior BNP leaders and activists helped maintain order throughout the program.
The condolence meeting reflected nationwide respect for Begum Khaleda Zia’s enduring legacy and her vision for a united, progressive, and knowledge-driven Bangladesh.
