Bangladesh Reaffirms 2030 Road Safety Target of halving deaths

Bangladesh has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by 50 percent by 2030, Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Shaikh Rabiul Alam said at a United Nations high-level meeting on global road safety.

Addressing the UN High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety, the minister highlighted the country's ongoing legal, policy and technological reforms aimed at improving road safety in line with the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030.

He said the government is expanding AI-enabled speed management, strengthening post-crash emergency response systems and implementing targeted highway safety measures, particularly to protect pedestrians, according to a press release from Bangladesh's Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

Rabiul Alam also reiterated the government's commitment to finalising and enacting a comprehensive Road Safety Law by December 2027, aligned with the Safe System Approach and international best practices.

Describing road safety as a national priority, the minister said achieving the 2030 target would require sustained political commitment, stronger partnerships and shared responsibility among all stakeholders.

He reaffirmed Bangladesh's commitment to working closely with the international community to build safer, healthier and more equitable roads for all road users.

Rabiul Alam is leading the Bangladesh delegation at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety at the UN Headquarters.
