Passengers using bus services in Dhaka and surrounding suburban routes will soon be required to purchase electronic tickets before boarding, as the long-anticipated e-ticketing system is set to be introduced citywide within the next week.
The initiative aims to bring discipline to the capital’s bus services by reducing traffic congestion, preventing fare disputes, curbing reckless competition among operators and enhancing passenger safety and comfort.
The upcoming rollout was announced at a press conference held in the capital on Sunday (19 January).
The system is being implemented jointly by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, transport owners’ and workers’ organisations, with technical management and operational support provided by Urbanmove Tech.
Additional Police Commissioner Md Sarwar said the e-ticketing system is part of broader efforts to improve traffic management in Dhaka. He said the digital system would help streamline bus operations, ensure compliance with fare regulations and improve the overall commuting experience.
Under the new system, buses will be required to pick up and drop off passengers only at designated stops. Passengers will need to purchase tickets through a mobile application or electronic device before boarding, and fares will strictly follow government-approved rates, with students continuing to receive half-fare benefits.
Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md Anisur Rahman, leaders of transport owners’ and workers’ organisations, and representatives of the technology provider were also present at the programme, alongside police officials and journalists.
