3-Magnitude Warning Signal Issued for Four Seaports

A low-pressure system over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal and northern Odisha could trigger strong squally winds over the northern Bay, seaports and coastal areas of Bangladesh.

In response, a local warning signal No. 3 has been issued for the seaports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra.

The warning was issued in a special bulletin signed by meteorologist Dr Md Omar Faruk of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department's Storm Warning Centre on Saturday.

According to the bulletin, the low-pressure system could lead to adverse weather conditions over coastal and maritime areas. All fishing boats and trawlers operating in the northern Bay of Bengal have been advised to remain cautious and stay close to the coast until further notice.

The weather office forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty winds, in most areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions over the next 24 hours from 9am Saturday. Some areas of Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions may also experience rain.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is also possible in different parts of the country. Day and night temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged.

The Meteorological Department's 120-hour forecast said similar weather conditions could persist from Sunday through Wednesday, with rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds in different parts of the country. Some areas may experience heavy rainfall.

The rainfall trend could continue for another five days thereafter, according to the extended forecast.
