US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump said he and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed in a phone call on Saturday that the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel "should end."
“He feels, as do I, this war between Israel and Iran should end,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “I also told him that his war should end too,” referring to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
During the same call, Putin reportedly told Trump that Russia was open to holding a new round of peace talks with Ukraine after June 22, once the current phase of exchanging prisoners and soldiers' remains concludes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not confirm whether Ukraine would participate in the proposed talks, only stating that "the exchanges will be completed, and then the next steps will be discussed."
This was the fifth known conversation between the two leaders since Trump returned to office, signaling a notable shift in U.S. foreign policy compared to the previous administration.
Trump's renewed engagement with Putin has raised concerns among Western allies, especially regarding the future of U.S. military and financial support to Ukraine. European nations are now assessing how to adapt in case of a reduced American role.
According to the Kremlin, both leaders expressed satisfaction with their personal relationship and discussed various international issues, including the Middle East crisis.
“They communicate in a businesslike manner and seek solutions to pressing issues, no matter how complex,” the Kremlin statement read.
