The death toll from the explosion of a gas truck in Mexico City has climbed to 29 with the addition of four more victims, the mayor's office said Sunday.

The truck was carrying nearly 50,000 liters of fuel when it overturned and blew up while travelling through the city's eastern Iztapalapa district on September 10, causing widespread damage and disruption.

Sixteen people remain hospitalized while 39 have been discharged, according to latest official figures.

The local prosecutor's office has said speeding was likely the cause of the accident.

The truck's tank ruptured in the crash, allowing the gas to escape and ignite, investigators said.

Mayor Clara Brugada has said her administration will regulate the traffic of fuel trucks in the mega-city of 9.2 million people to try to prevent future tragedies, reports BSS.
