Cargo collides with launch in Chandpur, woman goes missing

The accident took place at Amirabad area under Matlab Uttar Upazila in Chandpur at around 11:30 pm on Thursday



A Barishal-bound MV 'Sundarban launch-16' from Dhaka got stuck in the Meghna River in Chandpur after being hit by a cargo due to dense fog. A female passenger went missing and another passenger was injured.

The accident took place at Amirabad area under Matlab Uttar Upazila in Chandpur at around 11:30 pm on Thursday (January 4).

River Police Chandpur region SP Mohammad Kamruzzaman said, "In the accident, more than five hundred passengers of the launch panicked and one person went missing. The cargo ship that hit the launch has escaped. Chandpur Sadar and Mohanpur River Police are working at the spot to rescue the passengers. However, due to dense fog, the work was somewhat disrupted."

Chandpur Police Station officer-in-charge Kamruzzaman said a female passenger is missing in the accident. Another male passenger was injured. He is being treated at Chandpur General Hospital.

Siraj, supervisor of Sundarban-16 launch, said that they are safely staying in Ekhlachpur area in the Meghna river with the launch. There are more than five hundred passengers on the launch. Another launch will come to rescue the passengers.
