Tajul Islam, Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), revealed on Sunday that bomb devices were strategically planted with the intention of killing investigators working on cases of enforced disappearances.
Speaking to reporters at the ICT headquarters, Tajul explained, “During the course of this investigation, we uncovered evidence of bombs planted to target those involved, including myself as the Chief Prosecutor.” He further elaborated on the discovery of semi-underground cells, which were hidden behind sealed walls. To uncover these concealed crime scenes, investigators had to meticulously clear away layers of debris and garbage.
The Chief Prosecutor highlighted the numerous challenges faced by the investigative team, stressing that the public may not fully appreciate the complexity and danger inherent in their work. “These obstacles are substantial and have made our task much more difficult,” Tajul noted.
In a separate statement, Tajul also addressed ongoing efforts to derail the tribunal’s judicial process, saying, “There are calculated conspiracies aimed at sabotaging our proceedings. However, no conspiracy or scandal will thwart the tribunal’s work. We are confident that no one will find any evidence of corruption within our prosecution or investigation teams.”
He also commended the government's support, noting, “The government has shown a positive stance on our work, and we are optimistic that the progress of a second tribunal will soon be realized. Despite the accused’s efforts to interfere, these attempts will not succeed.”
Tajul concluded by reaffirming the tribunal's commitment to justice, ensuring that the pursuit of truth will continue unabated, no matter the obstacles.
