Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said elections under the proportional representation (PR) system cannot be introduced without amending the law, as the Constitution does not currently allow it.

“Debate is going on among political parties over this matter. I don’t want to take part in that debate. If the law is amended, then it will be possible,” he said at a views-exchange meeting with election officials of the Rajshahi region on Saturday.

The CEC stressed that the Election Commission cannot go beyond the Constitution. He also confirmed that preparations are underway to hold the next parliamentary elections before Ramadan in February.

He warned that attempts to capture polling centres or ballot boxes will be met with strict action. “If a centre is occupied, polling there will be cancelled immediately,” he said, adding that the army is likely to be included in the law enforcement framework during the elections.

Responding to queries, Nasir said there has been no pressure from the government regarding the polls. “If any pressure comes, I will resign. I won’t stay in this chair,” he asserted.

He further mentioned that the Awami League currently has no political activities as its trial is ongoing, preventing its leaders from taking part in elections until a verdict is delivered.

The CEC added that the Election Commission has 5,700 experienced officials, but those found responsible for irregularities in previous elections will not be retained. Detailed instructions were also given to regional officials to ensure smooth election preparations.
