The post-mortem examination of senior journalist Bibhuranjan Sarkar has been completed at Munshiganj General Hospital on Saturday morning.
Resident Medical Officer Sheikh Md Ehsanul Islam, who conducted the examination, confirmed that no external or internal injury marks were found on the 71-year-old’s body.
“The body was recovered from water and showed early signs of decomposition. We did not find any injuries. However, samples of teeth, hair, liver, kidneys, and stomach have been collected for further tests in Dhaka. A final opinion will be given after receiving those reports,” he said.
Bibhuranjan had gone missing on Thursday morning after leaving his Siddheshwari residence in Dhaka. His family filed a general diary with Ramna Police Station that night.
On Friday afternoon, his body was recovered from the Meghna River in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj. Police later confirmed his identity with the help of photographs and formal recognition by his family.
The body was handed over to his relatives on Saturday and taken to his home in Siddheshwari, Dhaka. His funeral will be held at Bordeshwari Kali Temple and crematorium in Sabujbagh.
Family members said they would decide later about filing a case after completing the funeral rites. Police confirmed that an unnatural death case would be filed, with further legal action depending on post-mortem findings.
At his ancestral home in Panchagarh, his 95-year-old mother, Madhobilata Sarkar, remains unaware of his death. Relatives said they plan to inform her before the body arrives, as she has been asking about the unusual gathering of neighbours and family members.
